What issue, event or idea does the cartoon address?
This cartoon relates to the fact that three thousand American soldiers have died in the five yearlong war in Iraq. The cartoon incorporates the execution of Saddam Hussein, which happened in 2006.
What key people or groups are part of the cartoon’s message?
Saddam Hussein is the man hanging on the noose, which was how he was executed. Hussein was the dictator of Iraq for three decades. The other man is Uncle Sam, who represents the United States.
Choose one technique (symbolism, exaggeration, labeling, humor/irony, or stereotype) and briefly explain how the artist used it in the cartoon.
What is the message of the cartoon? What do you think is the cartoonist’s opinion or point of view on this issue?
Through the use of a label, it is easy to tell that the author wanted his readers to recognize Hussein. The use of the traditional clothing to depict Uncle Sam let people know that this cartoon is dealing with the issue of the American/Iraq war.
It seems that the artist of this cartoon believes that three thousand American soldiers have died but the only success so far in the war was America’s capture of Hussein. It cost three thousand man and women to capture and kill one man.
