I believe that the United States should take steps to prevent Iran from creating nuclear weapons if it is their intent. As many people have stated before, Iran had an enrichment program for 18 years before telling anyone. This makes the United States, and other countries, distrustful of Iran since they have been deceitful in the past. However, sanctions that have been placed on Iran have not been successful in getting Iran to end its programs. Iran has stated that it will not be “bullied” by other countries. Therefore, other nations placing sanctions on Iran are probably angering it. I agree with Thurds. that it is a very fragile situation. In order to make a decision about Iranian policy, more research should be done. However, I do agree with the idea that diplomacy should be tried since that option has not been explored as thoroughly as possible. I think that nations, especially the Security Council, should try to get Iran to freeze its programs as talks get underway. This would create a less urgent tone at preliminary meetings.

However, this is not to say that sanctions should be lifted; on the contrary, if Iran refuses to participate in diplomatic talks or continues to refuse to compromise, additional sanctions should be implemented.

I think Iran has a right to go on with its nuclear program. There are other countries, like Israel and Palestine, that have nuclear programs and there is evidence they are really doing it, but nobody cares about it. And I don't think especially those countries can forbid Iran to stop. But I think its OK to be afraid that Iran might build weapons and don't let the inspectors in. I think it's important to go on talking with the leaders of Iran, but I think the sanctions don't really do anything: Iran keeps on playing with the inspectors. Maybe if we would offer them to replace their nuclear energy facilities with other facilities to create clean energy, such as windmills or helioelectric power plant, they might give in, if their means are well.

Iran with nuclear weapons is a threat to Israel, peace in the middle east, and the world. Iran's evasive behavior with weapon's inspectors and their secret 18 year old nuclear program is unsettling. The fact they could have kept such a large thing secret for so long makes one think they could have other secrets as well. Their evasive and secretive behavior may conclude the fact that they are making nuclear weapons and not just nuclear power. World leader should put sanctions on Iran until they are more cooperative and then if nuclear weapons are found, or nuclear plants making nuclear weapons, they should be destroyed. If no sign of nuclear weapons is found they should be allowed to continue a nuclear power program.

I have mixed feeling about the United States taking steps and trying to stop Iran from developing nuclear power plants. The reason for this is because I feel the country of Iran has the right to have nuclear power even if we don’t feel comfortable with them having it. We went into Iraq because they supposedly had WMD and they didn’t have anything so as of right now I don’t have much trust for the United States government and I feel that they want to persuade the people of the US to think that Iran is very dangerous because Israel has a problem with them and Israel wants us to fight another war for them. But at the same time Iran did lie about producing weapons under ground for 18 years and when it comes to nuclear weapons you can’t really take any chances, especially because of the hatred between Israel and Iran. If you take any chances in this situation it could end in deaths of many innocent people. I don’t think there is any wrong or right way of dealing with this situation. But I feel the US needs to secure there economy so we can start to put pressure on the Chinese government so they will talk to Iran and take care of the situation since they have a lot of influence with Iran.

an Iranian government with nuclear weapons would be dangerous to many countries including Israel, other countries in the Middle East, and some countries in Eastern Europe. They have signed the NPT in 1970, and did have a hidden nuclear program for 18 years. This shows that their nuclear research facilities need to be heavily monitored. Since they signed the NPT they have no reason to bar investigators from any nuclear facilities, so sanctions should be put in place if Iranians refuse to allow investigators in nuclear facilities, or if there is evidence that they are working on nuclear weapons.

I think world leaders should take additional steps to try and stop Iran from developing Nuclear Weapons. Even though news came out last year saying they hadn't/weren't creating nuclear weapons, what's telling us they haven't been making them in the underground thing they've had for 18 years now. What is an alternative to sanctions, we how about the world leaders get together and offer Iran essentials they may need, rather then punishments if they stop. The main question is if we decide to put sanctions on, how do we know if now or later is the right time. If we put them on now, out of anger they might make, or use (if already created) nuclear weapons. And later, could that be too late? Negotiate first. Something to think about.

With all my understanding the sanctions that were placed on Iran, in brief, are: bans on sales to Iranians and Iranian companies, mandates to prevent suppy, sale and trade of all items and goods from all united nation members, prevent dealings with Iranians banks, EU froze assets of Iran's largest bank, ect. These are great sactions choices though the fear that Iran is still secretly creating nuclear power for the worst like the above person states that they hide for 18 years, that its still going on and that all these sactions have only risien their hatred towards the U.S.. I do feel more needs to be done by other surrounding states/countires to help and more sanctions to be placed from others. Though like mention the fear that nuclear bombs could still be made these are the right actions to take becuase the U.S. had given Iran and its people the choice to "get ride of" all plants of nuclear power and start over with the U.N. help. Iran resused and this is their punishment.

I think the world leaders should take steps to monitor Iran from developing nuclear weapons. If Iran does make nuclear weapons, Israel would be in danger like the first person commented. I don’t want to believe it’s their intent, but countries have different ways in which they defend themselves. Sanctions should be placed on Iran if they make nuclear weapons.

yes I agree. Iran said they are making Nuclear Power but it also said in the reading that Iran had a secret facility underground for 18 years developing nuclear weapons. Because of this, I personally do not believe they are just making nuclear power but trying to get produce nuclear weapons. With that said, I believe that we should demand that they shut down the nuclear "power plant" so that places like the United States and especially Israel who have had direct threats from the Iranian Government, be safe.

I think that the world leaders should take additional steps to try to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons. If Iran makes nuclear weapons, Israel is in danger. President Ahmadinejad has said very controversial statements about Israel, and if the world is not careful, Iran could attack them with nuclear weapons.
